South Africa's Drakensberg Mountains or uKhahlamba, barrier of spears, is revered by hikers and archaeology aficionados alike. This chain of mountains, extending 200 km (124 miles) along KwaZulu Natal's border with Lesotho, has been designated a World Heritage Site for its natural and cultural significance. Hike to one of the park's many caves and discover one or more of the 35,000 rock paintings made by San bushmen, stone age hunter-gatherers that inhabited this area as early as 8000 years ago. And should the kids need a break from cultural expeditions, spend a lazy morning or afternoon fishing for bass and trout in the many rivers and dams or ride horseback through the Berg.
