Auca Mahuida, Neuquén

Rating:

A trip to Auca Mahuida is truly in the spirit of Indian Jones. Located at the foot of the Batea Mahuida volcano some 145 km (90 miles) north of Neuquén, this dinosaur “nursery” is accessible only via dirt roads. Mind your step, the round gray-brown patches of sediment, scattered across 25 km (15 miles) of Patagonia’s badlands, are the remains of dinosaur nests. Sauropods are believed to have deposited hundreds of thousands of eggs in this area more than 80 million years ago.

Getting there

Located roughly 145 km north of Neuquén. From Neuquén take Provincial Route 7 to Provincial Route 8.
Things to keep in mind

Given the poor quality of the roads and lack of roadside services in the area it is advisable to visit the area with a guide.
