The Buenos Aires Botanical Garden, officially known as Jardín Botánico Carlos Thays, is an oasis for families and offers travelers a chance to pause. Conceived by the French-born Argentine architect and landscaper Carlos Thays in 1898, this garden of exotic plants is more than 7 hectares of green and is home to near 5,500 species of plants, trees and shrubs. The Buenos Aires Botanical Garden boasts three distinct landscape styles - Roman, French and Japanese - and five winter gardens. It houses a Botanic Library and Botanical Museum. The botanical garden was declared a historical monument in 1996 and received accolades at the Paris Expo in 1899.
What is a Botanical Garden?
Botanical gardens, also called botanic gardens, are large green spaces displaying a wide variety of living plants. Some botanical gardens grow a single kind of plant, such as cacti. Others tend plant life from a specific area of the world, such as Japan. Many botanical gardens grow trees, plants and shrubs for scientific and educational purposes. Others cultivate plant life for exhibition. Most botanical gardens are open to the public. All botanical gardens document and label the plants they grow.
