Barry's Amusements may not be comparable to the world's mega theme parks yet this 80 year old institution is an integral piece of the North Coast experience. Founded in 1925 by members of two British traveling circuses, Chipperfield and Trufelli, this Northern Ireland amusement park has a mix of modern and traditional amusements. Family favorites include the Big Dipper, Cyclone and bumper cars.
History of the Carousel
The carousel, also called flying horses and the merry-go-round, got its start in the medieval Middle East. The carosella or 'little wars' was a game of horsemanship played by Arabian knights. The skilled horsemen tossed perfumed balls from one to another while riding in a circle. Europeans, fascinated by the game, brought it home and dressed it up. These regal tournaments, which saw elegantly dressed riders on beautifully decorated horses, were played at court festivals throughout the late Middle Ages. Tiresome Dukes, always in search for something new, changed the nature of the carousel in the period of history known as the Baroque. In the early 1600s, they replaced the balls with spears and ribboned rings. The horse ballets became so popular that they were staged at markets and fairs across the continent and by the end of the century the first wooden ride appeared.
