The Basilica of St. Peter, officially known as Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano, is more than a big church. It is the burial site of St. Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. It is located in the Vatican City not part of Italy. It is noted for its art. - Bernini's colonnade and baldacchino. Michelangelo's Pietà and cupola. - It is considered one of the greatest buildings of its time, both Renaissance and Baroque. It is protected by Swiss Guards in funny costume. And while Saint John Lateran, the first church in Rome, is the true seat of the Pope he almost always presides at St. Peter's Basilica.

Bernini's Baldacchino

Alfredo De Simone

The baldacchino, baldachin in English, in the Basilica of St. Peter was sculpted in bronze by the artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Commissioned by Pope Urban VIII in 1624 to top Saint Peter's tomb this large structure also serves as a canopy for the Papal alter. A statue of an angel sits on top each of the baldacchino's four twisted columns. The canopy top is shaped like a dolphin's back to make the heavy structure look light. The baldacchino is decorated with elements of nature such as the laurel leaf and bee that symbolize Urban VIII and reflect the Baroque style of the times. And while all of that is fine and good what makes the sculpture really interesting is the controversy surrounding the baldacchino's bronze. Papal accounts suggest the bronze came from Venice yet most Romans accept as true the story that Pope Urban VIII looted the portico of the Pantheon to save money.

Standing in line and battling the masses wears thin fast. To avoid the queues and crowds arrive well before 9am. And if you want St. Peter's to be remembered focus on things kids find fun and limit your visit to just 1 hour. Make sure to spend a few minutes in Bernini's Colonnade (on your way in or on your way out) and watch as the second and third rows of columns disappear as you make your way to the focal points of the ellipse.
