The Battle of Spioenkop, also spelled Spionkop, was one of the bloodiest battles and greatest British blunders of the Second Boer War. Not only did some four hundred British soldiers lose their lives in the so-called 'acre of massacre' fought on 24 January 1900, the British made several tactical errors and retreated when the battle was as good as won making the hilltop skirmish the most futile of the four battles waged to liberate Ladysmith.
Getting There

Spioenkop battlefield is located roughly 30 km west of Ladysmith. The site is situated at the end of a clearly marked gravel road and is accessible from the R616.
Hours & Times

The battle site is open daily from 6:00 to 18:00. The self-guided trail weaves its way among trenches, graves and monuments.
