 Battle of Spioenkop

Battle of Spioenkop, Ladysmith

Rating:

The Battle of Spioenkop also known as the Battle of Spionkop was one of the bloodiest battles of the second Anglo-Boer War. Fought over two days in January of 1900, the Battle of Spioenkop was the most futile of the four battles waged to liberate Ladysmith from the Boer siege. Take the self-guided trail and view trenches, graves and monuments.

Getting there

Take the R616 in the direction of Bergville. The Spionkop Battle Site is located at the end of a clearly marked gravel road directly accessed from the R616.
Opening hours

The battle site is open daily from 6:00 to 18:00.
Things to keep in mind

Plan to visit the Spionkop at the end of the day. At sunset, the view of the Drakensberg Mountains is simply breathtaking.
