Camel Market, Bir Shalatein

The Camel Market (Souk el Gemal) in Bir Shalatein is one of the most memorable attractions on the Red Sea Coast. Thousands of camels are traded here each day. Tour the market. Learn about the one-humped camel called the dromedary. Discover the nomadic people that herd and sell. Desert tribesmen from Sudan make the journey overland. The 40 Days Road no longer flanks the Nile!

There are lots of fun facts about the Dromedary. Did you know that:

  • The dromedary, also known as the Arabian camel or one-humped camel, is a member of the camel family. It is an even-toed ungulate with one hump on its back.
  • Dromedaries live in hot, desert habitats and are found in Africa and the Middle East.
  • The dromedary has long, slender legs and callouses on its knees.
  • Dromedaries grow to 2 meters in height and can weigh as much as 600 kg.
  • The dromedary's long eyelashes aren't for glamour but for purpose. The long lashes keep the sand out of the dromedary's eyes.
  • Dromedaries vary in color from white to brown. The lighter the color, the tastier the meat.
  • Dromedaries eat grasses and thorny plants. They are ruminants and have a three-chambered stomach.
  • The dromedary's hump doesn't store water, it stores fat. Dromedaries with big hump are better fed than dromedaries with no hump at all.
  • Dromedaries can survive for long periods without water. When they drink, dromedaries can gulp up to 60 liters at one time.
  • Female dromedaries bear one offspring at a time. They produce 10 liters of milk each day and feed their young for one whole year.
