There are lots of fun facts about rhododendron. Did you know that?

  • Rhododendron is a genus of flowering plant and member of the Ericaceae family. There are more than a thousand species of Rhododendron. One of the best known Rhododendrons is the azalea.
  • Rhododendrons come in a variety of sizes from small shrubs to medium sized trees. They can be either evergreen or deciduous, meaning they lose their leaves seasonally. Rhododendrons are noted for their clusters of flowers.
  • Rhododendrons are native to four continents, Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. Most species are found in cool, mountainous climates but they occur in a variety of habitats - alpine, coniferous, woodlands, temperate rain forests and tropical jungles - and are found at elevations as low as sea level.
  • Rhododendrons need lots of water but don't like a baking sun They are sometimes called acid loving plants because they require acid soil.
  • Rhododendrons are a popular plant with gardeners and are often seen in public and private gardens.
