Crinan Canal, Kilmartin Glen

Crinan Canal, completed in 1801, was once a vital link in Scotland’s transport system. This man-made waterway, 9 miles long, boasts 15 working locks. What’s more, the flat towpath that fronts the channel is great place to walk and bike.

Getting There
Crinan Canal stretches 9 miles (14.5 km) from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan on the Sound of Jura. The canal runs parallel to the A83, A816 and B841.
Getting Around
The easy towpath is 6.84 mile (11 km) one-way from Lochgilphead to Crinan. This flat, paved trail can be walked in whole or in part and one-way or roundtrip. The one-walk is roughly 3 hours; the roundtrip walk is a full day affair. Anderson Coaches connects Lochgilphead and Crinan. The bus trip between the two is roughly 15 minutes. Leave your car in one, take the bus, and walk back. Scenic stops along the route include Bellanoch Marina, Cairnbaan and Oakfield Bridge.
Things to Keep in Mind
The towpath is often slippery after heavy rains.
