Not only is this research cum wildlife center a great place to learn about the oldest living reptile, it provides insight to the Lake St. Lucia ecosystem. Learn about Nile, slender-snouted (also called sharp-nosed and long-snouted) and dwarf crocodiles. View hatchlings and adults and see crocs of all sizes. Tour the exhibits on the local ecosystem and discover the importance of each environment - dune forest, grassland, beach, lake and ocean. And if time permits, see the snake display and observe bird life in the Cycad Garden.
 
Nile Crocodile Facts

There are lots of fun facts about Nile crocodiles. Did you know that?

  • The Nile crocodile is a large, lizard-shaped reptile.
  • Nile crocodiles are a dark, metallic brown and have black spots on their scaly tails and backs. They have green eyes, short legs, and long, powerful tail.
  • The Nile crocodile is the largest African crocodile. Males can measure up to 18 feet (5.5 m) and weigh as much as 2000 pounds (907 kg).
  • Nile crocodiles live in both freshwater - rivers, lakes, marshes, swamps, and dams - and brackish water - estuaries and coastal lagoons - habitats. They are found throughout Africa south of the Sahara.
  • The Nile crocodile is a social creature. Females fiercely guard their eggs and carry hatchlings when danger lurks. Both males and females roll their eggs to help young crocs hatch.
  • Nile crocodiles eat fish and animals, large and small. They are an apex predator meaning they have no predators.
