Dunluce Castle

Dunluce Castle, Portrush

Dunluce Castle perched precariously on the cliffs to the west of Giants Causeway is simply spectacular. Considered the most romantic and picturesque of the Irish castles, Dunluce also enjoys a colorful history. Occupied by the MacQuillan family as early as 1513, the castle changed hands numerous times in the following centuries. It was the stronghold of the MacDonnells, besieged by the British and returned to the MacDonnells until abandoned with the castle's kitchen fell into the sea.

What is a clan?

A clan, from the Gaelic word clan meaning children, is a group of people that share a common parentage. Some clans are patrilineal meaning clan members are related through their fathers. Others are matrilineal or related through their mothers. Others still are bilateral and are related through either male or female ancestors. Like bands of tribes all clans recognize a founding member. And while a clan's leadership changes with each generation the founder remains the group's symbol forever. The Scottish, Irish, Chinese, and Japanese cultures all have kinship groups called clans.
