A trip to Museo Municipal Ernesto Bachmann is all about Giganotosaurus Carolinii. Both original fossils and full-scale replica of this large theropod are on display at this small paleontology museum. Other exhibits include fossils of trees, turtles, and toads as well as two of more giants, Carnotaurus sastrei and Neuquensaurus australis.

Giganotosaurus, from the Greek words gigas, notus and saurus meaning giant south wind lizard, roamed Argentina during the late Cretaceous period from 98 to 96 million years ago. This extinct reptile measured 14 meters (46 ft) in length, stood 5.5 meters (18 ft) tall and weighed 8 tons (17,600 lbs) making it one of the largest carnivores ever discovered. Like all other Theropod dinosaurs, Giganotosaurus stood on two legs and had three-toed feet. It had sharp, curved teeth ideal for slicing meat. Giganotosaurus had a small, narrow head and smaller brain than other species of Theropod but it had a keener sense of smell. Giganotosaurus likely preyed on large herbivores and hunted in packs. Ruben Carolini, an amateur fossil hunter, discovered the first Giganotosaurus fossil in 1993 near Villa el Chocón, Argentina.
