Goldfield Ghost Town may be a shadow of its former self but it is still a great place to introduce kids to the Old West. Tour Mammoth Mine. Take a jeep tour. Pan for gold. Ride on a narrow gauge railroad. Horseback ride. Watch a wild west shootout. Visit the small museum. And if you manage expectations right a family trip to this replica 1890 circa gold mining town will yield more than a smile or two.
How Goldfield became a Ghost Town
An old rusty vehicle

An old rusty vehicle

Alfredo De Simone

At first glance the town of Goldfield doesn't look like much. There's an old mine, a few old buildings that are really new, and some tumbleweed. Yet believe it or not the town of Goldfield once had a population of 4000 and boasted a general store, post office, blacksmith, hotel and even a school. And it was home to one of the richest gold mines of the time. More than $3 million of gold was mined here before the year 1900. So what happened to Goldfield? A break in the gold vein forced the mines to close. Without jobs, there was little for the townspeople to do. So they packed their belongings and abandoned the town, leaving Goldfield to become the Arizona ghost town it is today.
