The Heard Museum in Phoenix is a great place to introduce kids to Native cultures and art. Tour Native American art exhibits. Explore the replica of a Zuni Pueblo. Facts about Arizona's First People
 

There There are lots of facts about Arizona's first people that make learning fun. Did you know that:

  • Arizona is home to 21 Native American tribes and over 250,000 Native Americans.
  • The Tohono O'odham Nation is the second largest Native American community in the United States.
  • The name of each Native American tribe has a special meaning to its people. For example, Hualapai means people of the tall pines; Havasupai means people of the blue-green waters.
  • The Gila River and Tohono O'odham tribes can trace their roots to the Hohokam, a prehistoric culture known for their canals.
  • The Zuni and Hopi people are descendents of the Anasazi, also referred to as the Ancestral Puebloans.
  • Neither the Navajo and Apache are native to Arizona. Both tribes migrated to the area after the 10th century.
  • The pueblo may be the best known of Arizona's Native American dwellings but it's not the only. The Navajos lived in hogans, the Apache in wickiup.
  • The Navajo weren't the only Arizona tribe to be forcefully marched from their homeland, the Yavapai and Apache were forced to march too.
