Inveraray Castle is the age-old home of the Campbell clan. Yet a trip to this 17th century Scottish castle has as much to do with the history of Scotland as a once powerful Scottish family. Tour the Armoury Hall. Tour the kitchen. Roam the gardens. See beds Dukes slept in.

Clan Campbell is a Scottish Highlands kinship group. All members of the clan share a common parentage and are related through their fathers. Gillespie O Duithne, born 1260, is the first recorded Campbell but may not be the clan's founding member. The Campbell clan ruled Argyll and Scotland's western islands for nearly four centuries. The lands around Loch Awe were the clan's first possessions. The Campbell's saw their fortunes rise in the early 1300s when they backed Robert the Bruce in the Wars of Scottish Independence. They consolidated their power through later battles and marriage. The chief of the Campbell clan was knighted in 1280, named Lord in 1445, made Earl of Argyll in 1457 and rewarded with the title of Duke of Argyll in 1703. Clan Campbell is one of the most powerful and successful Highlands clan.

Inveraray Castle is a stately residence. The grounds are beautiful, the castle exquisite. Yet our experience fell short. We visited in April and the castle tours were not yet operating. In lieu of a guide, we were handed information sheets. While they were choc-a-block with information, they transmitted no emotion. We left knowing much about the Campbell clan as well as the weapons and furniture on display but little about the fairytale.
