Jenny Lake, formed by glaciers little more than 10,000 years ago, is one of the most popular spots in Grand Teton National Park. And there's a reason. Not only is Jenny Lake the starting point of many Teton trails, it sits at the feet of the park's tallest peaks. What's more, Jenny Lake is great place to canoe and kayak. And while the lake's cold water is likely to put off even the most enthusiastic swimmers, few kids will forego the opportunity to skip rocks and dip their toes.

You don't have to hike far to beat the crowds

Jenny Lake Scenic Drive is one of the most popular routes at Grand Teton National Park and most everyone stops at Jenny Lake Overlook. Yet few visitors go the extra 100 feet. On the day we visited the car park was full but, apart from us, no one followed the short path to shore. Not only did the brief walk give us a chance to gaze in solitude, it provided my 9-year-old daughter a chance to skip rocks and wet her hands and feet.
