Kilmartin House Museum, a church manse turned archaeological museum, is great place to begin a tour of Kilmartin Glen. Discover the history of Kilmartin. Learn about prehistoric monuments. Have lunch at the café. View the 15-minute audiovisual before setting out on a search for centuries-old burial cairns, standing stones, stone circles and rock art and turn a walk in the green into a hike through history.
What is a Stone Circle?
A stone circle is an ancient monument made of large upright stones known as megaliths. Stone circles can be round or oval. A stone circle can be big or small. Stone circles were built thousands of years ago. Their purpose is a mystery. Some archaeologists believe they were used for ceremonies. Others think they were built to ward off evil. Some stone circles have burial grounds. Others do not. All stone circles are far from prehistoric settlements. There are more than 1,000 stone circles in the UK and France. Stone circles have been found in Israel, Scandinavia and West Africa too. Most are sited near the sea. In fact, only a few stone circles are located more than 100 miles from the coast.

Without a bit of knowledge, it's hard to grasp the significance of ancient stones. The small Kilmartin House Museum helps fill that gap. The 15-minute audiovisual is excellent as are the exhibits. The hands-on activities are a hit with children. The food at the neighboring Glebe Cairn Café is first-rate.
