Lamu Fort may not be much of a museum but this massive multi-storied fortress has an interesting history and boasts exceptional views of Lamu Old Town. Built between 1813 and 1821, the fort served as a garrison for Baluchi soldiers sent by the Sultan of Oman, provided office space and accommodation during the early colonial period, was used as a prison by both the British
colonial and Kenyan governments, and now serves as a cultural center. The exhibition space on the second floor houses a permanent exhibit on the environment. Weddings and cultural events are often held in the courtyard. Mount the ramparts for an insider's view of Lamu.
