Marafa Depression may not rival Mt. Kilimanjaro yet it's one more reason to make the trek to Malindi. This oft-overlooked geological feature tells of rock, time and tale. The Marafa Depression, known locally as Nyari and commonly called Hell's Kitchen, is a series of ribbed gullies and multi-colored gorges. The lunar landscape was shaped by wind, rain and sand. The layer cake-like strata are painted shades of red, yellow and white. Yet what makes this stretch of sunken earth truly spectacular is the legend of the place broken alone.
Getting There

Marafa Depression is located 33 km northwest of Malindi and is situated 500 m from Marafa. There are only two ways to get there, taxi and matatu. The former is the most convenient, the later the most adventurous. Matatus to Marafa depart each morning from Mombasa Road. This mode of travel may require an overnight.
Things to Keep in Mind

Admission is charged. Guides can be hired onsite. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon, sunset is particularly dramatic. Wear good walking shoes. Carry plenty of water.
