The Menor's Ferry Historical District may be a small speck compared to the towering peaks but it merits a visit nonetheless. Follow the short trail to the cabin and country store and take a peek at homesteading in Jackson Hole. Continue on to the Snake River and ride a replica of a turn of the century ferry. And while Bill Menor has long since gone imagine life below the Grand Tetons, one of last areas in America to be settled.

Until a bridge was built in 1927 Menor's Ferry was the only way to cross the Snake when it ran full. Homesteaders wanting to reach the other side paid Bill Menor a small fee for a ride. And while all of that is fine and good what is really cool is how Menor's ferry moved. A wooden platform set on two pontoons, the ferry had just one other part. A really thick wire called a cable secured it to each bank and kept the ferry from floating downstream. But the cable had another purpose too. It allowed the ferry to harness the current and move from shore to shore.

Menor's Ferry Historical District may not be heralded by the rangers at Grand Teton National Park (it's not included on their must see list) but it is was a hit with my 9-year-old daughter. Not only did the river crossing on a wooden reaction ferry provided a well-deserved break from nature it brought home facts learned at school.
