There are two reasons to visit Palazzo Te. 1) This simple square villa built round a cloistered courtyard is an important example of Mannerist architecture. 2) Palazzo Te is home to the Civic Museum, one of the best places in Italy to catch a traveling art show. Built by Giulio Romano in 1535, this celebrated villa was the play place of the Gonzaga dukes. The Gonzaga's came here to relax and entertain. Palazzo Te, once island bound, embodies their pleasure-loving lifestyle. Tour the palazzo. Take in an exhibit.
Mannerism
Mannerism, from the Italian word maniera meaning way, is a style of art. The movement lasted 80 years from 1520 to 1600 and is sandwiched between High Renaissance and Baroque. Mannerism originated in Florence and Rome but quickly spread north to Mantova, Paris and Antwerp. Mannerist compositions - drawings, paintings and sculptures - have clashing colors, distorted figures and flat spaces. Mannerism is the opposite of balance and proportion, the main characteristic of High Renaissance art. Correggio, El Greco and Michelangelo were Mannerist artists.
