Powell Marsh State Wildlife Area, part of the of the Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest and site on the Great Wisconsin Bird and Nature Trail, is a great place to view wildlife and introduce kids to birding. Spot waterfowl, waterbirds, migrant shorebirds, open-area birds and raptors. View muskrat, beaver, otter, mink, red squirrel, snowshoe hare, star-nosed mole, southern bog lemming and various species of shrew and mice and vole. And if your interest is reptiles and amphibians, spy wood frog, American toad, red-backed salamander and several species of snakes as well as a variety of turtles including the western painted turtle, snapping turtle and wood turtle. But don't forget to take note of the environment. Powell Marsh is not a marsh at all. It's a bog thanks to the accumulation of peat (decayed plants).

There are lots of fun facts about birds. Did you know that:

  • The African Ostrich is the largest living bird weighing 345 lb (156 kg) and measuring 9 ft (2.7 m) but the Moa, now extinct, is the largest bird of modern time. This native of New Zealand weighed 550 lb (250 kg) and was 12 ft (3.6 m) tall.
  • The world's smallest bird is the Bee Hummingbird. It weighs only 0.056 oz (1.6g) and is just 2.24 in (5.7cm) long.
  • The Wandering Albatross has the greatest wingspan measuring 11 ft 11 in (3.63 m) but the Onagadori has the longest feathers at 34 ft 9 in (10.59 m).
  • The Arctic Tern is the record holder in long distance travel. It migrates from pole to pole roughly 18,640 miles (30,000 km) round trip.
  • The Pacific Golden-Plover flies the greatest distance without stopping. It flies more than 100 hours at a time in its migration from Alaska to Hawaii.
  • The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird. It can reach a speed of 220 mph (354 km/h). More than twice the speed of a Pigeon!
  • The Pitohui and Ifrita, both native to New Guinea, are the only known poisonous birds in the world. They obtain the poison from a beetle they eat and secrete it through their skin and feathers.
