Punta Loma Reserve, Puerto Madryn
A trip to Punta Loma Reserve and Playa de Cerro Avanzado, on Puerto Madryn’s Gulfo Nuevo, is twofold adventure. Getting there and things to do. Hike, bike, kayak and even horseback ride from Puerto Madryn to Punta Loma. (It is possible to drive.) Observe southern sea lions at low tide. Watch guanaco, sheep and a variety of birds. Sunbathe at Playa de Cerro Avanzado. Snorkel in the cold water. Search the shore for seashell fossils. Comb the steppe for traces of the Tehuelche, a South American Indian tribe.

Getting There
Punta Loma is located on Gulfo Nuevo roughly 17 km (11 miles) south of Puerto Madryn. Playa de Cerro Avanzado is 3 km (2 miles) beyond Punta Loma. From Puerto Madryn, travel south on Boulevard Brown to Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia and take the gravel road to Punta Loma. Coastal trails are multi-use and open to hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. Several Puerto Madryn-based outfitters rent equipment and arrange excursions - hiking, biking and kayaking - to Punta Loma Reserve.
Things to Keep in Mind
Keep to the pathways and refrain from removing fossils. Admission to Punta Loma Reserve may be charged.
