Punta Tombo Penguin Rookery, Trelew
Punta Tombo Natural Protected Area is home to the world’s largest colony of Magellanic penguins. Roughly 300,000 of these feathered friends birth, breed and molt at this penguin rookery. Spot Magellanic Penguins in underground burrows and brooding on nests. Observe these tuxedo-clad birds as they forage for food and feed their chicks. Getting There
Punta Tombo is located 181 km (112 miles) from Puerto Madryn and 110 km (68 miles) from Trelew. To reach the rookery take Route Nº 1 (gravel track) from Rawson or RA3 to Route 32 and Route 1. A variety tour companies offer bus tours to Punta Tombo.
Hours & Times
The reserve is open daily during penguin season, mid-September to mid-March on average. The natural protected area is closed at all other times.
Admission & Fees
Admission is charged. A reduced rate is available for children aged 6-11. Children under 6 are free of charge.
Things to Keep in Mind
The well-marked paths are signed in English and Spanish. Keep to the wooden walkways and don't touch the wildlife. Plan to arrive early or be prepared to watch the penguins with the horde.
