Shela Beach

Shela Beach, Shela

Dune-fringed Shela Beach extends for 12km (7 miles) along Lamu's western coast. In contrast to the much-lauded Manda Beach, which all but disappears at high tide, Shela Beach is a great place to hunt for shells. And while there are no concessions at any point beyond Shela, locals offers camel rides in the sand.

Getting There

Shela Beach begins just beyond the village of Shela. The beach is roughly a 45-minute walk or donkey ride from Lamu. Dhows and motorized boats also make the journey and can be hired along the waterfront in Lamu.
