Siyabonga Craft Centre is a great place to shop for Zulu arts and crafts. Not only is this cooperative the largest craft market in St. Lucia it provides employment to local women. Shop for woodcarvings, hand-woven baskets and beaded jewelry.
Zulu Arts & Crafts
The Zulu, like all other African ethnic groups, are known for their functional art. Each pot and carving has a specific purpose or use. The decoration on each basket and beadwork tells us something about the owner or maker. Clay pots are made to carry water and brew beer. Palm leaves and grasses are woven into grain baskets and sleeping mats. Wood and stone are carved into forks, spoons and pails. A pot with a triangular pattern means it belongs to a man. A mat with a diamond pattern means it belongs to a woman. A basket with a checkered pattern is a wish of good fortune. The combination of color and shape in Zulu beadwork can tell the age, gender and accomplishments of the wearer or the feelings of the maker.
