Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary, Vilanculos
The Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary is a biodiversity hotspot and top scuba diving and bird watching destination. A mosaic of woodlands, wetlands and clear blue sea, this 25,000-hectare (62,000 acre) tract on Mozambique’s Inhambane coast was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2001. The 30-meter (nearly 100 foot) drop at Cabo São Sebastião or Cape St. Sebastian provides experienced scuba divers with an opportunity to spot mantas and reef shark and swim with giant groupers. And sea life watching isn’t limited to those with a passion for the underwater world. Southern right whales and dolphins are often spotted from the boat. Landlubbers will enjoy observing loggerhead and leatherback turtles as they make their way to and from the shore. Birding is another must. To date, over 300 species of birds have been observed in and around the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary.
