Zulu Basketry

The Zulu, the largest ethnic group in South Africa, are famous for their basketry. Traditional Zulu baskets are made of palm fronds and grasses. The fronds are soaked in natural dyes made from roots, leaves, berries, bark and even cow dung. Zulu baskets are coiled and are often decorated with geometric patterns. They are woven in one of four shapes based on their function - Bulb-shaped baskets, known as Ukhamba, are used to store beer. Isichumo, pot-shaped containers, are used to store water. Saucer-shaped bowls, called Imbenge, are used as a cover. Isisquabetho, large flat bowls, are used to carry and store grain. - and are woven tight enough to hold liquids!
