A trip to Wa-swa-goning, the place where they spearfish by torchlight in Ojibwe, is a unique family learning experience. Tour a wigwam. Find out how willow fish traps are made. Discover the tools the Ojibwe Indians once used. Learn how to make a fire Ojibwe style. And if the kids enjoy new games they can test their skills at double-ball. Wa-swa-goning is a living museum.
Wigwam or Tipi?
Ojibwe Birch Bark Wigwam

Ojibwe Birch Bark Wigwam

First People of America and Canada

Like the tipi, wigwams were used by Native Americans as dwellings. Yet the wigwam and tipi are very different from one another. Here's how:
  • The wigwam has a domed-roof and is round. The tipi is shaped like a cone.
  • The poles of wigwams are arched unlike tipi poles that are straight.
  • Wigwams are made from tree bark. Tipis are made from buffalo hide.
  • Tipis are easy to put together. Wigwams take a long time to build.
  • Unlike the tipi, wigwams are difficult to transport because the wigwam's bark 'shingles' are glued together with pine pitch.
  • Wigwams were used by Native American tribes that lived in wooded areas. The tipi was used by tribes that lived on the open Great Plains.
