The trek to Wetherill Mesa rewards intrepid families with more than just a peek at another cliff dwelling. It offers archaeological viewing in near solitude. Take the self-guided Step House Trail and follow the Ancestral Puebloans or Anasazi Indians as they make their way from pithouse to pueblo. Visit the Badger House Communities and experience 600 years of pueblo development. Hike Nordenskiold #16 Trail and enjoy exceptional views. Partake in the ranger-led tour of the Long House cliff dwelling and learn more about life below the mesa top. And as you make your way along Wetherill Mesa Road view the remains of electrical storms.
Getting There

Wetherill Mesa is situated 12 miles (19km) from the Far View Visitor Center and roughly 27 miles (44km) from the main entrance of Mesa Verde National Park. Allow 45 minutes for the drive from Far View Center.
Getting Around

The hop-on hop-off tram service at Wetherill Mesa provides weary hikers with alternative means to explore. All Wetherill Mesa trails are graded moderate. Long House tours depart from the Wetherill information kiosk and include a short tram ride to the trailhead. The 0.75-mile (1.2km) round trip hike has a 130ft (40m) ascent and involves climbing two 15-foot (5m) ladders. The winding, self-guided Step House trail, 0.75 miles or 1.2km round trip, has a 100ft (30m) descent and ascent. The 1-mile (1.6km) round-trip Nordenskiold #16 Trail is on gravel path. Taking the tram to the Badger House stop shortens the 2.5-mile (4km) Badger House Community trail by 1 mile.
Hours & Times

Wetherill Mesa is open from Memorial Day (late May) to Labor Day (early September) only. Long House (guided tours only) and Step House (self-guided) are open 10:00 - 17:00. The last Long House tour departs at 16:00.
Admission & Fees

A ticket is required for Long House tours. Access to all other ruins on Wetherill Mesa is free of charge. Tickets can be purchased at the Far View Visitor Center 8:00 -17:00 or the Morefield Ranger Station 17:00 - 20:30 from late May through mid-August only.
Things to Keep in Mind

Restrooms and a kiosk selling snacks are located near the Wetherill information both.

Apart from the museum, Wetherill Mesa is Mesa Verde in miniature. Pithouses, cliff dwellings and hiking trails. It is significantly less crowded than Chapin Mesa. Our ranger-guided tour of Long House had only 7 people including our party of 4. (There were 30 on our Cliff Palace tour.) The lightening scorched landscape provides fodder for conversations of a different kind. And you don't need to drive from site to site: park your car and explore.
