Whale watching tours, Puerto Pirámides
Observing whales up close is a great adventure for adults and kids. Whale watching tours depart from Puerto Pirámides and can be arranged on site or booked in advance. Excursions last slightly over an hour and accommodate anywhere from 20 to 70 passengers on open-air catamarans and covered boats. Whale watching trips are best in September and October when population is larger and the weather is beginning to get warm. Both Jorge Schmid Punta Ballenas and Pinino Aquatours have been running whale watching tours for years. Other providers include Estación Ballenera, Hydrosport, Moby Dick Catamaran, Peke Sosa Avistajes, and Tito Bottazzi.

Callosity
A callosity, like a callus, is a patch of thick skin. So what makes callosities interesting? For starters, only the three species of Right Whales - North Atlantic, North Pacific and Southern Right Whales - have callosities. They are found on the whale's head and form a unique pattern on each one making Right Whales easy to identify. What's more, these seemingly white patches are actually gray and not nearly as rough as they look. The whale lice that live on Right Whale skin make the callosities look white and rougher still. |
