Windmills, Zaanse Schans

Zaanse Schans may be kitsch but this outdoor museum embodies all things Dutch. See green wooden houses. Tour fully functioning windmills. Watch craftsman mold wood blocks into clogs. Find out how cheese is made. Observe a silversmith demonstration. See traditional costumes. Take a boat ride on the River Zaan. Notice the patchwork of farmland, polders, canals and arable land. Snap a picture of a giant wooden shoe. Visit the Zaans Museum and put it all into context. A trip to this replica of a typically Dutch village provides a vivid image of life in 17th and 18th-century Holland.
