A hillbilly is a person who lives in a rural or mountainous area of the U.S, such as Appalachia and the Ozarks, and has no sense of modern culture. Hillbillies are often portrayed as poor, ignorant, white Southerners who live in shacks, wear old cloths, carry a shotgun, drink moonshine and have lots of children. The term hillbilly, like redneck and trailer trash, is an ethnic slur. So when writing a school report or visiting a remote mountainous area, it is best not to call the locals hillbillies.
