Eagle River and the surrounding area of Three Lakes and St. Germain have long been considered the heart of the Wisconsin Northwoods. Situated on a chain of twenty-eight lakes, the largest freshwater chain in the world, Eagle River is noted for fishing and watersports. Whether you spend your family holiday teaching the children to cast a line or perfecting the art of water-skiing, barefoot, a summer vacation in Eagle River is all about time with the kids. And summer is not the only season for family fun. In Eagle River, tourism is a year-round event. Biking and hiking as well as birdwatching and wildlife viewing are ideal in both spring and fall. Colorama and the Cranberry Fest make Eagle River a great autumn weekend getaway. In winter, snow sports abound. Snowshoe, cross country ski, snowmobile and atv on miles and miles of designated trails. Plan your winter holiday to coincide with the annual World Championship Snowmobile Derby or Klondike Days and take in the town's festive atmosphere. And if it's raining or too cold for the kids to comfortably enjoy the great outdoors, take in an Eagle River attraction or two.

 
Getting there
 
Eagle River is situated on Hwy 17 in northern Wisconsin. From Chicago, take I90 west to Madison, I39 north to Merrill, and Hwy 17 north to Eagle River. Most families traveling to the area will make their way by car. From Minneapolis, take I94 east to Chippewa Falls, Hwy 29 to Wausau, I39 north to Merrill and Hwy 17 north to Eagle River. Trans North Aviation Ltd provides commuter service between Eagle River and Chicago's Palwaukee Airport four times a week and to/from Minocqua 's Lakeland Airport and Chicago's Palwaukee Airport twice weekly. Midwest Airlines provides daily service between Rhinelander and Milwaukee and Northwest Airlines offers daily service between Rhinelander and Minneapolis.
Getting around
 
Public transportation in the Wisconsin Northwoods is limited. Families flying into Eagle River or any of the other area regional airports should consider renting a car. Car rentals are available from Parson's Chevrolet in Eagle River. Several car rental companies have offices at the Oneida County Airport in Rhinelander 22 miles (35 km) away. Yet you need not be a slave to the car in the Wisconsin Northwoods. Area trails provide an excellent alternative to the automobile. Hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobile trails offer families an opportunity to explore Eagle River and the surrounding area at a relaxed pace.
When to travel
 
The weather in the Wisconsin Northwoods affects more than the layers of clothes required when heading outdoors. Weather can affect how the fish are biting as well as the condition of local trails. And while family fun is to be had no matter what time of year, the amount of time you spend outdoors will depend on what Mother Nature has in store. Summer (June - August) is the peak fishing season and best time to enjoy area rivers and lakes. Colorama, the local term for the changing of the leaves, begins in late August and ends in mid-October. Winter sports from cross-country skiing to snowmobiling are optimal from January through March. Klondike Days are held in the third week of February each year.
