Giants Causeway

Giants Causeway, Ireland

Giants Causeway in County Antrim, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and must see for families traveling in Northern Ireland, is perched high above Ireland's rugged northern coast. The Causeway is an easy day or overnight trip from Dublin, Ireland's Capital, as well as a great vacation destination for families on a longer tour of this Celtic island. Hop on the steam powered train in Bushmills and explore the wilds of Donegal. And as you round the last headland, let the anticipation build. Even the youngest member of your crew will be taken by the beauty of this stretch of Irish coast.... Read More

The result of intense volcanic activity 60 million years ago, Giants Causeway is a spectacular natural phenomenon. It is not surprising that the massive polygonal columns of basalt found here inspired legends of giants striding over the sea to Scotland. Help the kids identify the formations known as the Chimney Stacks, Wishing Chair, Harp, Organ and the Camel's Hump.

Follow the circle walk from the car park to the visitor center and, if you're feeling adventurous, hike the coastal path 11 miles (18 kilometers) all the way to the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and take-in spectacular views of the Causeway. Head to the visitor center for lunch. And in the event of snaking queues, enjoy a quiet meal at The Nook, a charming stone pup conveniently located at the entrance to the car park.

When to Travel

The one certainty about the weather in Northern Ireland is that it will change more than once each day. It is not unusual to experience rain, sunshine as well as hot and cold in a single day, even in summer. In July, the average daily high is 17° C in the uplands and 19° C at lower altitudes but it can easily reach 30° C. The coldest months are January and February when the average daily high is between 5-7° C. While May and June have the lowest rainfall plan for rain on holiday throughout the year.

Travel Health & Child Safety

The shortest available metaphorical reins are required on all children visiting the Causeway. You would be somewhat challenged to design a more dangerous playground. Slippery rocks, sheer drops and crashing Atlantic waves mean guardians must be hawk-eyed at all times.
Hours & Seasons

Giants Causeway is open seven days a week from 10:00 to 17:00 March through October and from 10:00 to 16:30 November through February. The shop and tearoom are closed 25 and 26 December.
Admission & Fees

Admission to Giants Causeway is free but it is £5 to park, £1.6 to ride the minibus and £1 to watch the film.
