Built by the 3rd Duke of Argyll between 1734 and 1822, the hamlet of Inveraray is one of the earliest and best-preserved planned towns in Scotland. Walk straight wide streets. See Georgian homes. Visit Inveraray Castle. Tour Inveraray Jail. Take in the views of Loch Fyne. Explore the countryside. Thanks to its proximity to Glasgow, Inveraray is a great place for a short family holiday.
Planned Town
A planned town, also known as a planned city, planned community and new town, is carefully planned settlement. A planned town is a way of relocating a population around newly created hospitals, parks, shops and factories. A planned town is usually built on unused land. Planned towns are generally square. The streets of a planned town are usually straight and regularly spaced. A planned town is often laid out in a grid-like pattern. Planned towns may sound like a contemporary idea yet they are hardly new. The first planned towns were built in the Middle Ages. And while they didn't always have straight streets, much thought was given to their construction.
