Isla de los Pajaros, Peninsula Valdes
Isla de los Pájaros, Bird Island in Spanish, is more than the first stop on the Peninsula. This seabird colony on the north side of Istmo Carlos Ameghino is great place to watch birds. Kelp gull, great egrets, neotropic cormorants, blackish oystercatchers, magellanic penguins, and rock shag are all native to this tombolo. And while the island itself is no longer accessible, a trip to the visitor center, complete with telescope, will ensure the kids don’t miss the action.

History & Culture
There is more to Peninsula Valdes than animals and birds. The Tehuelche, a South American Indian tribe, camped here each winter for roughly 12,500 years.

Online resources make learning lots of fun. Learn about southern sea lions, southern elephant seals, southern right whales and Magellanic penguins. All four of these marine mammals frequent the cold waters off the coast of Patagonia. Get fun facts about dinosaurs big and small and, in addition to finding out why these reptiles once roamed here, reconstruct the landscape. Who knows what you might learn?
