Run by South Africa’s North West Parks and Tourism Board and managed as a joint venture between the state, private sector and local communities, Madikwe is regarded as one of the finest conservation areas in Africa. Thanks to Operation Phoenix, the largest game translocation operation in the world, more than 8,000 animals have been released into the reserve since the multi-year project was initiated in 1991. In addition to meeting its conservation and tourism objectives, Madikwe has also succeeded in providing economic opportunities to local residents.

The reserve's diverse landscape ranging from high inselbergs (rocky hills) to acacia studded bushveld (grasslands) and thick riverine forests make it ideal for wildlife viewing. In addition to the African big five, view three of South Africa’s most endangered species - brown hyena, African wild dog and black rhino - as well as nearly 60 other large mammals. Madikwe is also a birdwatchers paradise with roughly 300 species including many raptors.

Due to years of apartheid, tourism in South Africa was driven primarily by local needs making it more child-friendly than many European countries. This tradition holds true at Madikwe. Several safari lodges cater to families and, in addition to babysitting, offer special game drives and activities for children under 8. The guides, one of the most important factors in the success of any wildlife safari, are not only knowledgeable but also excellent at explaining the bush to kids. And older children are not left out of the adventure. Walking safaris offer a true sense of the wild for children over 12.
