Hawker, Marsa Alam

The small village of Marsa Alam is one of Egypt's top sea and sun destinations. Not only does this stretch of Red Sea Coast boast sparkling seas it has the look and feel of a tropical paradise - coral reefs, sandy beaches, mangroves and palm trees. What's more, the southern dive sites host a whole range of sea life and are, as of yet, unspoiled. Spot tropical fish. See sharks and rays. Swim with dolphins. Watch green turtles and even dugongs. The one drawback? There's no movida on this strip of sand. There are no restaurants, outside of the hotels, and no markets or village shops. And even if one or two were built they would likely be distant. The resorts and dive camps at Marsa Alam are scattered north and south along the coast and many are a considerable distance - 50 kilometers or more - from the main village.

Fringing Reef

Alfredo De Simone

Fringing reefs aren't a kind of decoration but rather a type of coral reef. They form in shallow water and grow parallel to the coastline. Like all coral reefs, fringing reefs need a warm environment and thrive in tropical waters between 18°C and 30°C. Fringing reefs prefer hard surfaces to sand and are most often found in oceans with a rocky seabed. Fringing reefs have two sides, a reef flat and reef slope. The reef flat is closest to shore and most of its corals are dead. The reef slope faces the open sea and is the most impressive side of the reef. The fringing reef is the first stage of coral growth and the most common form of coral reef.
