Puerto Pirámides, Argentina
Traverse the isthmus to Puerto Pirámides, the only village on the peninsula and departure point for the area's whale watching and scuba diving tours. Trek or travel 4 km (2.5 miles) to Loberia Piramides and watch sea lions or 12 km (7.5 miles) to Punta Pardelas, a snorkeler and diver’s paradise. And in addition to observing sea life, take time to hunt for shells or simply relax on the golden sand shore.

Getting there
Puerto Pirámides, just off the N2 on the Gulfo Nuevo side of the Istmo Ameghino, is 32 km (20 miles) from the entrance to the reserve. Organized tours depart daily from Puerto Madryn.
Getting around
Puerto Pirámides is the departure point for the peninsula's whale watching trips and scuba diving excursions. A variety of other tours also depart from here.
When to travel
The peak season for sea life viewing is from spring to early summer, September to December. Southern elephant seals and southern right whales frequent these waters in spring with top viewing in September and October. Dolphins - dusky, long-finned pilot, Commerson and Peale - are most frequently sighted in summer from December to March. Orca whales can be seen in October and November and from February to April. While sea lions frequent the coast year-round, viewing is best from December to April. Magellanic penguins nest in October and November and the young are active from December to March. Bird watching is best from September to February. In spring, the weather is usually mild and sunny but windy.
