Santa Carolina Island, Mozambique
At 3 km (2 miles) long and roughly 500 meters (0.3 miles) wide, Santa Carolina Island (also known as Paradise Island) differs greatly from its southerly neighbors. And the difference extends beyond the island’s small size. Santa Carolina is a true rock island. Deep channels lie just beyond the coral reef and the sand dunes and tidal flats that characterize Bazaruto, Benguerra and Magaruque islands are absent here. Yet a day trip to the second smallest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago is no less rewarding. Great snorkeling is just a few steps from shore and the surrounding channels are nothing short of a fisherman’s delight.
