Sencar, part of the Quilalea Sanctuary in Mozambique's remote Quirimbas Archipelago, is more than just a buffer to the sea. This 75-hectare (185 acre) uninhabited island, a mix of coastal and mangrove forest, provides refuge to numerous sea and woodland birds including heron, plovers coucal and mangrove kingfisher. And notwithstanding the absence of fresh water, the Samango monkey also calls this small round island home. A day trip to Sencar Island is a must for families intent on birding in absolute solitude.
