Superstition Wilderness Area, Arizona
Superstition Wilderness Area, located east of Phoenix, is revered by gold diggers, hikers and horseback riders. Whether your family outing in this section of the Tonto National Forest takes you on a search for the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine, Hohokam rock art or stunning desert landscapes, the well-developed trail system covering roughly 160,000 acres (64,750 hectares) ensures something for everyone. Yet this starkly beautiful and often rugged wilderness area can be inhospitable to those unprepared. Select a trail that matches the ability of the least skilled member of your group and plan your outing with the weather in mind.

Superstition reviews
Exceptional for the extremesSubmitted on 13 November 2007 by snowedunder from Monza, Italy
We've hiked the Peralta Trail on several occasions both pre and post kids. The 6.2-mile hike to Fremont Saddle offers exceptional views of Weavers Needle. While the hike is tough going for younger children - kids that are too big to be carried in a child carrier and to small to walk a long distance on a steep, rocky trail - it is ideal for parents carrying infants and toddlers in a front or back pack and families traveling with older kids that like to hike. Wear hats and sunscreen, pack snacks, carry plenty of water and avoid hiking at mid-day. Was this review helpful?
