Tamegroute, Morocco
The series of interconnecting ksour known as Tamegroute (also spelled Tamgrout) situated on the edge of the Moroccan Sahara was for centuries an important center for religion and education. Visit the Zaouia Naciri, built by the Naciri Sufi brotherhood - a moderate Muslim sect noted for its peace making and missionary activity among the Berbers -- and which houses a marabout or holy tomb, a religious institute for boys, and the Librairie Coranique (Koranic Library). Walk through passageways that make their way both above and underground. Stop at the medieval potteries. And if you are here to see the desert, travel 5 km (3 miles) to the sand dunes at Tinfou or 78 km (48 miles) to M'hamid where the road literally comes to an end.
