Tigre, Argentina
A day trip to Tigre offers families a fun break from city touring. This riverside town, once a holiday destination for wealthy Porteños as the residents of Buenos Aires are known, is today nearly part of the capital's sprawling metropolis. Yet the short ride along the Rio de la Plata will transport you to a very different time and place. And the journey begins from the moment you step foot on the train. Grab a seat by the window and take in the panoramic view of the river as well as several of the capital's more upscale neighborhoods. Once in Tigre, walk a few blocks to the docks and watch a very different life unfold. Visit the market and walk along boats and stalls hawking fruit, vegetables and local crafts. Take a river cruise and explore one or more of the neighboring islands. Stop in the San Isidro Plaza, most colorful on Sundays, and admire the Cathedral. And if you are in search of good kid fun, head to the Parque de la Costa, the local amusement park, with the requisite shows and attractions.
