Williams, Arizona
Williams, named after the famed mountain man Old Bill Williams, has a distinctive Wild West feel. And this once frontier town offers families more than a chance to experience the Old West. Williams is home to the Grand Canyon Railway and it is the self-proclaimed ‘Gateway to the Grand Canyon’. Families in search of an alternative to the crowds and expensive accommodation that characterize the South Rim may want to consider basing their Grand Canyon adventure in Williams.

Getting There
Williams is located 60 miles (97 km) south of the Grand Canyon and 30 miles (48 km) west of Flagstaff in northern Arizona. From Flagstaff, take the I-40 west.
Getting Around
The Grand Canyon Railway makes its way between Williams and the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park daily. The train trip is 2.5 hours each way.
When to Travel
The day and nighttime temperatures vary greatly and evenings and early mornings can be cold, even in summer. Snow is likely from December through March and possible in November and April. If you intend to visit the Grand Canyon from here, in summer, it is advisable to plan your trip for a weekday rather than weekend.
Things to Keep in Mind
Arizona is a land of extremes. The highest and lowest temperature in the U.S. is often recorded here on the same day. Pack with the highs and lows in mind and plan to dress in layers.
