There is more to Mantova than Renaissance architecture and old world charm. It is a great place to cycle with children. Bike the perimeter of the fortified city. Ride round Lago di Mezzo. Cycle the banks of the Mincio north to Lake Garda. Bike to Bosco Fontana. Ride south to Governolo and, in addition to watching the Mincio flow into the Po, find out how locks work. You need not be a poet or a fanatic to enjoy a bike trip with kids in Mantova.
The Mincio River flows 75 km or 46 miles from Lake Garda to Governolo. It runs through two regions of Italy, Lombardy and Veneto. The Mincio has two highs, spring and fall, and a winter low. And while the Mincio isn't one of Italy's longest rivers, it is one of the most important. The Mincio drains Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. It is a major tributary of the Po. The Mincio is navigable for its entire length. The river is an important fish habitat. Several threatened species, such as the Adriatic sturgeon and South European Nase, are found in the Mincio River.
