Hiking with Kids in Italy's Cinque Terre
Hiking is part and parcel of any trip to Italy’s Cinque Terre. Most visitors, even families, will walk at least one segment of the coastal footpath that connects the ‘five lands’ - Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. While the hike from Monterosso to Vernazza and on to Corniglia requires a moderate level of physical fitness, the trail between Corniglia and Manarola as well as the paved Via dell’Amore between Manarola and Riomaggiore are accessible to everyone. Families with energetic kids need not limit their adventure to the crowded coast, marked hiking trails, sentieri in Italian, take intrepid family walkers to the hinterland as well as points beyond the Cinque Terre. The walk from Levanto to Portovenere, via the High Road or Sentiero Rosso, is more 12 hours and as the locals will kindly advise you, ‘non ci passa più!’.

Hike the Cinque Terre reviews
A great place to hike even with kidsSubmitted on 04 April 2008 by snowedunder from Monza, Italy
I've hiked the coastal footpath with an infant and toddler in a child carrier and with an 8-year-old child in tow. And each trip has been fun. We pack our towels and end each walk with a swim. My daughter's favorite beach? The handkerchief-sized shoreline in Vernazza. It has sand as well as a gradual slope. Of note, the 'large', sandy beach just beyond Corneglia, direction Vernazza, can be more of a challenge than a reward. The steep climb back to the trail is a tough hike up. The inlet in Rio Maggiore has no beach at all. The rocky beach in Monterosso is tough on little feet even with water shoes. 1 out of 1 travelers found this review helpful. Was this review helpful?
