The Rockette Experience: A must do for young dancers

This is the best summer in years to visit New York City. The weather is unseasonably cool and there are amazing hotel and restaurant deals to be had. If you know a young woman who loves to dance, drop everything and plan a weekend visit around a limited-run class called “The Rockette Experience”.

My 10-year old cousin Crystal has been studying tap and jazz dance since the age of two. Her dream of dancing like a Rockette came true last weekend in a rehersal studio hidden within Radio City Music Hall.

Crystal and two dozen other young dancers lined up and learned part of several Rockette numbers from the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular. By the end of the class they were kicking in their own Rockette lines, though their legs didn’t get “eye-high” like those of the actual Radio City Rockette who led the class.

It was fascinating to watch a Rockette up close as she effortlessly demonstrated dance moves that would have had me toppling over. After the class the Rockette answered all the young dancers’ questions and offered them realistic advice about a dancing career.

Crystal says she will never forget dancing on the actual Radio City Music Hall stage and rehearsing with a real Rockette. I have to admit it was pretty nifty for me, too, and I didn’t even break a sweat.

The Rockette Experience workshops for 2009 are scheduled for August 8, 9, 15, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30 at Radio City Music Hall. The three-hour workshop, offered at 10:15am and 1:15pm each day, costs $108. The fee for chaperones and guest of the students is $28.95 and includes the Stage Door Tour.

You can register for The Rockette Experience online at www.rocketteexperience.com or by calling 212-631-4354.
