Xanterra, the primary concessionaire in Grand Canyon National Park, runs mule rides along and below the South Rim. Half-day rides, 3 hours in length, trek to Abyss overlook. Rides depart daily mid-March through October. Overnight rides travel 10.5 miles to the canyon floor and are 5.5 hours down and 6.5 hours up. Overnight lodging is at Phantom Ranch. Family Travel Tips: While there is no minimum age, all riders must be at least 55 inches (1.38m) tall and weigh no more than 200 lbs (91kg) fully dressed. All riders must speak and understand the English language and be in good physical condition. All trips depart from Stone Corral near Bright Angel Lodge. Mule trips below the rim are not for folks with a fear of heights.
